Tremendously moving, quirky, imaginative and powerful, the sequence of pictures portrays the struggles with language, food, housing, transport and work faced by immigrants who may come here from radically different or undeveloped countries. I believe the author more than achieved what he set out to accomplish when he began the four year(!) I would give it 6 stars if I could.

In this novel the Andalites come to Earth, but it’s not at all what the Animorphs anticipated. Filled with subtlety and grandeur, the book is a unique work that not only fulfills but also expands the potential of its form. Disclaimer: I'm reading this series for the first time as an adult. [1] Tan differentiates The Arrival from children's picture books, explaining that there's more emphasis on continuity in texts with multiple frames and panels, and that a "graphic novel" text like his more closely resembles a film making process. Meg Mitchell Moore's THE ARRIVALS is a stellar debut novel in the tradition of Stewart O'NAN, Anne Tyler and Alice Hoffman, a novel about the importance of family and the bitter truths children learn only when they're grown. I have no problem making up a story for the pictures; I just like it more when a story is provided. No words.

My first 'graphic novel'. The Arrival is a migrant story told as a series of wordless images. The Arrival – adult or teen picture book, sepia, surreal & in places unsettling, metal scary dystopia about a man who has to leave his family to work away. The "graphic novel" conveys messages of solitude, alienation, and hope in a foreign land.
