One day someone was here the next they were gone. I had my sister watch this movie (a devoted Pentecostal) she said it was the sadist thing she had ever seen. Great care was taken to accurately depict one particular community at one particular time--when AIDS was first being diagnosed as "the gay cancer," up through the mid-eighties, when attending monthly funerals was commonplace for gay men and their friends. A landmark film, not only in that it is the first film to deal with the AIDS crisis, but also in its portrayal of gay men and their friends. Don't have an account? The phrase is taken by everybody to mean "lover," but newspapers prefer the euphemism, and only in the age of AIDS have they even finally admitted that homosexuals do not live, or die, alone. Formally unadventurous, a little PBS-y, but undeniably moving as it evolves. A touching story, a bit preachy, but daring for its time. Review/Film; Manhattan's Privileged and the Plague of AIDS. A very beautiful, intelligent and impressive movie.

Try not to cry when Bruce Davison (always fantastic) tells his years sick lover to let go. Perhaps no other film - before or since - has captured the paradox of living with AIDS and dying FROM AIDS - two distinct life and worldviews that anyone with HIV, Cancer or other life-threatening ailments must confront on their own terms, day in and day out. It would be "like the end of World War II," Mary-Louise Parker's Lisa says.

It begins with the characters reading and reacting to the New York Times' famous 1981 report on the "rare cancer seen in 41 homosexuals," and ends with that heartbreaking beach scene in 1989, with characters speculating on what it would be like if a cure was ever found.

I don't cry easily, and so when I do it was some damn fine story telling. (Parker is just one of the people in the movie who would go on to become bigger stars. Consider an article in Newsday from 1990: "Features about AIDS have had roughly the popularity in Hollywood that the Vietnam war had before 'Platoon.' and the Terms and Policies, She, like many, never wanted to see past the homosexual thing. I was a physician in New York City from 1989 until 1992, and saw a tremendous number of people with AIDS.

It still makes me weep.

Bruce Davidson is nothing less than superb as the caring partner. It's heart-rending. The movie, as one might have expected, wasn't an easy sell. Few films have done a better job of illustrating the virtue of "visiting the sick" - that cardinal act of mercy most neglected in an America that likes to let hospitals take care of that sort of hard work. Tears kept falling on my face…, On peut en dire ce que l'on veut et regretter le côté larmoyant, j'adore, j'adore et j'adore encore un peu plus à…, As a LGBT youth, I came across this film late at night not expecting to learn and feel. i bought the DVD and watched it the other night.

It really is a tearjerker when most of the men died from aids. two scenes are especially going to stay in my mind forever.

The fight has been so brave that it is hard to end it. Yesterday I have seen it for the second time and again I was deeply moved by it. the ICU scene and the bedroom scene with Bruce Davison telling someone that its okay and let go.

The central scene in the film - one of the most emotionally affecting scenes in any film on dying - involves Bruce Davison as the lover of a dying man. The early scenes aren't shaped, and much of the handling seems static. . We are introduced to a group of gay friends and their mates, who spend much time together in vacationing on Fire Island, the gay resort, and in the hospital visitng each other when stricken with the unknown disease that has become a plague amongst us today.

When I watched this for the first time, I like many that went through this time period, identified with most of the characters in this movie at one time or another. and this film should continue to make an impression over time as well. It takes us from the belief that AIDS is a "gay cancer" to present day (meaning early 90s), when gay activism for increased research is becoming common. The balance of the film is simply too honest to support such sentimental wish-fulfillment fantasies. I feel that this movie, although it may appear to be dated, is an excellent portrayl of events that were all too common at that time. And Mary Louise Parker add a special touche. And a huge waiting.
