Film follows Chicago high school students Turman and Jacobs through girl trouble, school trouble, and law trouble, in a tone ranging from mass-appeal comedy to deathly serious. Difference is, Cooley High’s eulogy for childhood turns out to be much more sadly literal.
Every now and then there would be a film centered in and filmed in Chicago, but Cooley High did a lot for the city in terms of revamping their stake in the movie business.
Both films inevitably lace their fun with melancholy, chasing a long, wild coming-of-age bacchanal with the impending hangover of adult life.

The L makes several cameos in Cooley High, including a prominent appearance during the opening credits. Which makes it even more heart-breaking when you see the entire film. But I really appreciate what this film did for not only the black community, as a part of the black exploitation film era, but also what it did for Chicago as a city. In these little-incidents-strung-together-into-a-whole kind of films, a lot of the impact depends on how much you care about the lead characters so I was hamstrung by finding Preach cocky and mostly charmless but hey, that's teenagers for you, the scamps. I like Cooley High not so much for it's story as for how it makes me think about the past. No late fees. Screenwriter Eric Monte hails from the Cabrini-Green Projects, just like his characters, and he went to the (now closed) Cooley Vocational High School.

Metacritics rating: Behind them, Chicago looms large—not just through the shots of its iconic skyline but also in the little details of these “basketball days” and “high nights.”. We won’t be able to verify your ticket today, but it’s great to know for the future. Obviously being a white male, I'm not necessarily the target audience, but I think there's a lot of fun to be had with this group of kids from Cooley High.
